Cup Final joy for Runcorn Linnets Greens!!!

Saturday saw the hotly anticipated Halton & District Junior Cup Final between Runcorn Linnets Greens and Runcorn Linnets Yellows at Haddocks Woods.

It was a nervous and cagey start from both teams which was to be expected and neither teams could really get anything going, Adam had a half chance from a corner but could not connect with it properly and he saw his effort go wide, the Yellows would push forward but Jack was there to sniff out any danger and stop them in their tracks and at half time it remained goalless.

The second half started and the Greens came close to finally breaking the deadlock when Charlie hit a free kick from near the half way line which was heading for the top corner but was finely saved by the Yellows goalkeeper and Harrison was unlucky not to poach in the rebound! It really was an end to end game but still both teams found it hard to create a clear opening until finally Harrison finally found a breakthrough when there was a bit of a scramble in front of the goal and from a very tight angle he managed tuck it away in the corner! There was still plenty of times for the yellows to try and find an equaliser and eventually they did when the ball broke free in midfield and with a quick pass their forward was there on the edge of the box to smash the ball home to make it 1-1! The Greens could of easily let their heads go down following the equaliser but they kept pushing forward but could not find the winner and so it went to extra time.

The Greens came racing out the blocks and quickly found the all-important second goal when Adam, who was having a quiet game for him, burst into life when he used his pace to beat the defender to a loose ball on the edge of the area and with a quick look up he placed the ball into the bottom corner just out of the goalkeepers reach! The Greens then quickly struck when a move straight from the training ground resulted in their 3rd goal, Mackenzie gathered up a loose ball in his area and rolled it out wide to Charlie who looked up and played the ball down the line to Matthew, he let the ball run past him so he was on his right foot and then hit a rocket of a shot into the far corner to make it 3-1!

The Yellows rallied themselves up for a final push but again they couldn’t find a way past Jack in the heart of defence and also Mackenzie who somehow whilst on the floor managed to stretch his arms out and get 2 hands on the ball preventing a certain goal! The greens almost got a 4th when Robbie showed some great skill down the wing and crossed it over to Adam who just couldn’t get his head on it to divert it goal wards! With a minute left Noah came on to sure up the midfield and made a great tackle and duly kicked the ball down the line and out of play to bide the Greens some time for the final Whistle which quickly followed!

Jack Miller was named the Greens man of the match as he put in a true captains performance when it was required, he made numerous tackles and interceptions throughout the game and was always looking for a pass and not just hoofing the ball away, his voice could be heard by everyone throughout as he barked his orders out to his team mates and was always quick to praise too, he really was a true leader and an absolute warrior that day!

It was a great final to watch and the Yellows played really well and put up a great fight but well done to the Greens, all their hard work throughout the season has really paid off and thank you to Ste Chaney and Ste Malam for turning them into the team they are!
