SCORES ON THE DOORS
U7 Yellows
Back on their home pitch, it was a fast start from Linnets with Logan scoring within a minute. After a good run and perfect weighted pass by Rhys, Logan was gifted a quick-fire double. Rio was then called into action making excellent back-to-back saves, from which Linnets broke and Logan was there again with a great finish.
Winwick responded well with some nice play and goals. Linnets got control back in the game through Louis & Harry playing with great awareness to step in to midfield when possible to maintain possession. Anthony got on the score sheet with a crisp strike from the edge of the area after rounding the keeper.
The first half ended after a stinging Winwick free kick was bravely defended by Oscar, who put his head where it hurts and ran off for a well-deserved half time juice with a face full of mud!
At the start of the second half, Rhys struck an unstoppable free kick in to the top corner - a fantastic strike! Logan scored the pick of his goals showing great vision and skill with a delightful chip from the corner of the box. Logan then unselfishly tried to set up Oliver but the Winwick defence did well to divert it out for a corner. Oliver worked an opening for himself with a good run and finished if off well.
Anthony showed great determination to be the first to a rebound and finish after Luca was denied by the post. On the lookout for a goal for his team the Winwick keeper ventured forward for a corner and Luca took advantage to dribble the ball with pace and slot into the empty net. The pick of the final stages was a goal by Anthony after a fantastic solo run and shot.
Joint man of the match awarded to Logan & Rhys. Thoroughly deserved for Logan after an outstanding display in attack and a great all round performance by Rhys.
Well done to both teams.
U12 Blues
RUNCORN Linnets' under 12s Sunday Blue team secured their place in the semi-finals of the Chester and District Junior Football League Cup with a game to spare thanks to a hard fought 3-1 win at home to Newton Athletics Reds on Sunday.
With a healthy goal difference, the Yellows should finish top of group B and gain a favourable draw in the semi-finals should they continue their impressive winning streak at Blacon in their final group fixture.
Buoyed by their outstanding 6-1 victory at Victoria Cross Dynamoes the previous weekend, Linnets began in confident fashion and took the lead when Jack Rigby directed a well flighted corner beyond Newton's goalkeeper with a smart flicked header finish.
But the visitors were soon back on level terms following an innocuous penalty decision.
A knee injury forced Yellows skipper and stonewall defender Luke Smith to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines.
Central midfielder Jack slotted into Luke's position at centre half seamlessly as Linnets defended well throughout.
With Newton struggling to create openings, Linnets always looked in control of proceedings and they regained the lead before the half time break when Jake Hill latched onto a clever flicked pass from Callum Turrell to bundle the ball home.
A long pass over the top of Newton's defence caught the visitors napping soon after the restart and the Yellows' leading goalscorer Josh Senior was on hand to guide the ball into the bottom corner with a cushioned side foot volley.
A host of other goal scoring opportunities went begging but with Jack, man of the match William Harrison, Jake Schwarze and Callum defending manfully and Harvey Batters looking assured between the sticks the result was never in doubt.
